The El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service (EFRS) provides fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical service to the El Dorado community and adjacent areas along the Route 285 corridor.  EFRS is part of the Santa Fe County Fire Department and is in the Eastern region which also includes the Hondo, Glorieta and Galisteo Fire Departments.  EFRS is a full service, volunteer fire department augmented by a 24 hour, 7 day a week staffed regional medical unit maintained by Santa Fe County to serve the Eastern region.

The El Dorado Fire and Rescue service averages about 25 members but, as with any volunteer organization, that number can vary up or down.  Current members range from those still on probation to those with more than 20 years service to the community and fire department.

EFRS responds to emergencies from three stations within the district:

  1. Station 1 – The main station is located on Avenida Vista Grande between Avenida Torreon and Avenida Del Monte Alto;
  2. Station 2 – Located on the corner of Avenida Vista Grande and Avenida Casa Del Oro;
  3. Station 3 – Located on Route 285 in front of the Santa Fe County waste transfer station.

A fourth station is planned for the South side of the district in the Lamy area.

EFRS maintains twelve pieces of fire, rescue and medical equipment including:

  • Four engines with capacity to carry up to 1,500 gallons of water and the capacity to pump up to 1,200 gallons of water per minute;
  • Two medical units (ambulances) each capable of providing advanced life support;
  • Two water tenders with the capacity to carry up to 1,500 gallons of water;
  • Two brush trucks used for wildland firefighting.  One brush truck is a Type 6 engine carrying 250 gallons of water and the other is a Type 4 engine carrying 750 gallons of water;
  • A heavy rescue vehicle which carries a wide variety of rescue and extrication equipment;
  • A tower ladder truck which is a 70’ aerial platform that carries 500 gallons of water and has the capacity to pump up to 1,500 gallons of water per minute.

The El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service recently received a Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating of 4.  The PPC program evaluates fire protection programs throughout the United States under the general principal that a community’s investment in fire mitigation is a reliable predictor of future fire losses.  Based on PPC survey results, a rating is assigned by ISO to a community’s fire protection program.  Many insurance companies base their premiums for fire insurance on this rating.  The EFRS rating of 4 is the highest PPC rating for a volunteer fire department in the State of New Mexico and places EFRS in the top 5% of all ISO rated fire departments in the state.  Although it will vary by individual insurance company, this improved PPC rating may result in lower fire insurance premiums for homeowners in the El Dorado Fire District.  Check with your insurance carrier for specifics and remember to tell them about the improved PPC rating in the community where you live.

We value the support of the community and EFRS will continue to be there whenever you need us.  We welcome your input and are always looking for new members so please feel free to stop by Station 1 on a Saturday morning, call 466-1204 or e-mail us at eldoradofire@QWEST.NET if you have any questions or feedback.  For any emergency, dial 9-1-1.
